The Tilted City

The way in which a city organises itself socially and physically has always been strongly determined by the way in which people move around in the city. For centuries everything was designed in function of travel on foot, in a carriage, on horseback or with a horse and cart. Stations, tramp stops and railway lines influenced the new urban development. The economic and cultural activity centres also moved along with the times. From the Fifties onwards the widespread use of cars caused another upheaval in urban development and the concept of the use of space dramatically changed.
“The tilted city” shows the impact of past and present evolutions on how people, organisations and companies move around as well as on the experience, viability and safety of the city. This tour reveals how Central Station created a shift in terms of mobility and activity in the city, and how it is doing this again today. How contemporary urban projects will do this, including Noorderlijn and Operaplein as an excellent example.
